I recommend deep cleaning your sofa once or twice a year (I usually prefer spring and fall). But it’s better to vacuum your couches once a month and deal with spills to avoid permanent stains.

Over the years, I’ve cleaned everything from IKEA couches to sofas and upholstered chairs, and they’ve all gotten a deep clean that looks like new.

Always test any cleaning solution you use on an inconspicuous area. Wipe a small area with a white cloth and cleaning solution. If the sofa color appears on the fabric, do not use the cleaning solution on the sofa.

If possible, disassemble and remove the covers from the sofa cushions. Take the time to “puff” with the pillow sticks. Shake the lid well to loosen any loose debris.

My favorite combination for white linens throughout the house (sheets/towels/beds/covers) is to wash with 1 capsule of OxiClean White Revive and a cup of baking soda. Make all dirty white shades and clean without bleach!

OxiClean White Revive is color and septic safe if that’s a concern for you. I’ve been using it on our white IKEA covers for years to make them as white as possible.

Line dry until moist, TINXoxxx. It’s best to put a clean cover back on the sofa cushions while they’re still wet to stretch the wrinkles, not shrink them and make them easier to protect.

If you are washing the covers for the entire sofa, you can throw the whole thing in the wash separately from the cushion covers to avoid crowding.

But since our beds need to be cleaned more on the arms, I didn’t want to go through the trouble of cleaning the entire cover. You can also use the method below on the stained shirt on the couch.

Remove all loose hair, dirt and debris from under the sofa cushions and on the sofa upholstery itself with the vacuum wand brush attachment. Get into each corner and crack as much as you can with the stick handle.

To absorb any odors, sprinkle baking soda all over the couch (focusing on high-traffic areas like the arms of the couch) and let it sit for at least 30 minutes.
