It’s important to know how to recognize when someone is having a seizure, what steps to take to keep them safe, and when to call 911.

Not all seizures look the same. Some seizures, such as complex partial seizures, seem to be under the influence rather than having a seizure. They are not aware of their surroundings and cannot follow orders. Tell the officer to avoid unnecessary injury, such as arrest, humiliation, or worse.

There are different types of epileptic seizures. The best response depends on the type, severity, and general condition of the seizure. The important thing is to rest and protect the epileptic from harm. Most seizures are harmless and pass within minutes.

Some seizures cause a person to become mentally absent (“zone out”) for a short period of time, or cause muscle contractions. Such minor seizures are usually harmless. But people with this condition later feel anxious or fearful and feel uncomfortable. Therefore, it is important to reassure them and make them feel safe.

Some seizures affect consciousness so deeply that the person may exhibit abnormal behavior. They may feel lost or confused. So it is important to prevent them from doing something dangerous like running into the street. If possible, try to remove them calmly without using undue force. Being nervous and interacting with people can cause unexpected reactions. It’s best to offer help and let them know you’re there for them. Just “being there” will help. This is also important when they are recovering from a seizure.

If someone has a severe seizure, that is, the whole body shakes, falls, or faints, you can do the following.

You don’t always need to call 911 when someone is having a severe seizure: If it goes away suddenly and the person is awake (“awake”), you can talk to them about whether or not to call. This is required only in the following cases.

There may be an epilepsy information card that includes the patient’s condition, medications needed, and the name of the contact person. Emergency medicine is always available for some people with epilepsy. If they have seizures that last longer than five minutes, the person with them can give them medication to stop the seizures. Move dangerous objects out of the way and do not disturb people. Slowly remove people from the hazard or remove all hazardous materials. Then gently talk to the person to calm them down and stay with them until they are fully awake.
