But Canberra’s emergency rescue community says while they are still receiving many requests for help, getting help is as easy as a phone call.

Everyone in the veterinary community is aware of the financial crisis, says Nurse Practitioner and President of Pet Support ACT Nikki Hunt.

“A lot of people who come here have pets that can be treated, but they can’t afford the treatment. They think the only option they have is to get the pet removed. Get off the dock because they don’t want to hurt them. .”

Ms Hunt said it can be difficult for vets to know when pet owners are lying about their animals’ behavior or condition.

“We have to take it at face value [but] a dog might just be an inconvenience to some people or they just can’t afford it,” he said.

“Especially post-Covid, they’re buying this Oodle breed puppy and saying, ‘We bought it because it’s supposed to be hypoallergenic and it sheds and my kid is allergic to it.'”

“[There] we are trying to discourage them from deciding to put the animal down because it is not easy anymore.”

The Animal Support Act began when Canberra doctor Eloise Bright noticed clients asking to give up healthy animals because they couldn’t afford treatment, Ms Hunt said.

Ms Hunt said this year the group has seen three times as many requests for help since it started in 2009.

“The cost of living and the cost of care is going up, and we’ve seen a huge increase in requests for help,” he said.

While emaciated dogs made headlines last week, Miss Hunt and Rainbow Paws president Natarsha Lawrence said she could see pet owners starving by not feeding their animals.

They distribute pet food to 16 community pantries and provide food directly to those without access to pantries.

“[That’s why] we deliver food to the pantry, so if they need food, they can get something for themselves and their pets,” she said.

While many people just need some help to get through a temporary financial situation, others may decide that they cannot afford to keep their animals long term.

Ms Hunt said there were a number of organizations in and around the ACT that took in rescued pets, and many would “move mountains” to ensure their animals didn’t drown.

“If I tried to surrender a dog, rescue groups would be the first place I would go because, like I said, they would move mountains,” he said.

“They put them in foster homes, and then they put a lot of work into rehab, trying to get them fit and put them up for adoption and put them in forever homes.”

These rescues include the ACT Rescue and Foster Group, which takes in dogs, Canberra Pet Rescue for cats and Rabbit Sanctuaries for rabbits.

Ms Lawrence said Canberra Rescue, Pounds and the RSPCA were linked and often worked closely with local vets.

“Just contact someone and we’ll all work together, and we’ll find a way to help,” he said.
