The Animal Support Act began when Canberra doctor Eloise Bright noticed clients asking to give up healthy animals because they couldn’t afford treatment, Ms Hunt said.

While emaciated dogs made headlines last week, Miss Hunt and Rainbow Paws president Natarsha Lawrence said she could see pet owners starving by not feeding their animals.

They distribute pet food to 16 community pantries and provide food directly to those without access to pantries.

“[That’s why] we deliver food to the pantry, so if they need food, they can get something for themselves and their pets,” she said.

Ms Hunt said she had seen people lose medicine to pay for their pets’ veterinary care.

While many people just need some help to get through a temporary financial situation, others may decide that they cannot afford to keep their animals long term.

Ms Hunt said there were a number of organizations in and around the ACT that took in rescued pets, and many would “move mountains” to ensure their animals didn’t drown.

“If I tried to surrender a dog, rescue groups would be the first place I would go because, like I said, they would move mountains,” he said.

“They put them in foster homes, and then they put a lot of work into rehab, trying to get them fit and put them up for adoption and put them in forever homes.”

These rescues include the ACT Rescue and Foster Group, which takes in dogs, Canberra Pet Rescue for cats and Rabbit Sanctuaries for rabbits.

Ms Lawrence said Canberra Rescue, Pounds and the RSPCA were linked and often worked closely with local vets.

“Just contact someone and we’ll all work together, and we’ll find a way to help,” he said.
