We are taking a multi-pronged approach to tackling this debt so we can start focusing on our $90,000 in student debt.

Ways To Pay Off Your Student Loans Faster

To start paying off your car loan faster, you need to create a road map. Don’t go into the process without a plan of how you are going to tackle the debt so hard.

This roadmap should seek to answer three questions. When? How? What? You should see when you want to pay back. Next, see how and what you can do to pay off your car loan faster.

You have to make sure that you choose things that you can achieve. I want you to be able to pay off your car loan faster!

It’s a good thing I have a list of easy ideas to use. Let’s start!

Upstart — How Do I Pay Off My Loan?

One of the first things we do is look carefully at our budget to find where we can cut costs. We decided to reduce our weekly grocery bill by 25%. We also cut recreation and utility budgets.

Review your budget to determine which categories could see their costs reduced. Some easy categories to look at first are entertainment, restaurants, groceries or utilities. I use Mint to help us plan our budget and see where we are actually spending.

A poor way to adjust our budget is in the summer. We were able to temporarily waive childcare costs. As a teacher, my wife had summer vacation so we were able to take her out of preschool for 10 weeks. This ended up saving us $3,000!

Reducing excess spending goes in the same direction as refining our budget. I think of optimizing your budget as looking at the big picture and reducing overspending as working in the details.

So how have we curbed our overspending? Easy. Start by looking at each expense you have and ask yourself, “Is this a need or a want?” If it’s a must, save it. If there is desire, it must be suppressed. Do you really need to take a soda every day on the way to work (personal example)? Maybe not.

We were able to lower our cable bill. We didn’t need it anymore, so I canceled it, so we just had our network. This saves us 50% per month on our cable/internet bill.

Of course, many factors are needed. This includes groceries, cell phones, gas, etc.

In today’s digital world, it is very easy to find coupons to help us save money. I recommend getting the Honey add-on for your web browser to help you shop online (see review here). Then, for in-store purchases, I’ll download the Ibotta app to your cell phone (see review here).

This app helps my wife and I save money every week, which we can then use to pay off our car loan faster.

If you read my article How to Get Rid of Clutter, you know that I try to sell things around the house that I no longer need in my life. Well, I sold most of the items on my list. This money saved almost $1,000 on the car loan. Pretty cool, right!?!?

Your task is to check the things you rarely use in your home. Ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” Does this help me achieve my goal or distract me from it? » If you don’t need the item or it’s uncomfortable, it’s time to sell it. You can sell the item on Craig’s List or eBay to help you earn extra cash and pay off your car loan faster.

A side hustle consists of side projects you do to earn extra money in addition to your full-time job. These jobs can include selling photography, driving for Uber, delivering for Amazon, freelance writing, etc.

I use any income from Wallet Squirrel or my photography sales to help my wife and I reduce our car loan.

Ads are everywhere tempting us with the latest and greatest gadgets to buy. Giving in to this temptation is one of my weaknesses because I am a materialist. So I had to find a way to minimize this temptation rather than wanting to go out and buy things I don’t need.

Paying Off A Car Loan Early: Does It Affect Your Credit Score?

For me, the biggest culprit is all the emails from retailers I like, like REI. To mitigate that, I started using Unroll.Me to unsubscribe from all those annoying emails.

The last item on this list is the centerpiece that brings it all together. You must be focused on your end goal.

I find my overall goal written down with each sub-goal that will lead me to the final goal below. Then I review this goal each week to decide which sub-goals I will achieve. It feels so good to check off this sub-goal knowing that I’m one step closer to achieving this overarching goal.
