Before you can get student loan forgiveness, you must first validate your federal student loans and get on an income payment plan that offers loan forgiveness.

What We Know About Biden’s Plan To Forgive Student Loans

You need a Federal Student Aid username and password (FSA-id) to consolidate federal student loans. Go to Fsaid.ed.gov to get it. (Click on “Create FSA-id” and follow the instructions)

Use the Student Loan Consolidation Payment Plan Calculator to get a quote on what your new payments will be after consolidation. Before you begin the consolidation process, consider your options.

After logging in to StudentLoans.Gov, start consolidating your student loans by clicking “Consolidate My Loans” and following the instructions.

When you click on “My Loans,” you’ll be prompted to review all of the federal student loans you want to consolidate.

What Student Loan Forgiveness Means For You

You can choose Navient, FedLoan Services, Nelnet, Great Lakes Education Loan Services, or any other servicer available.

These loan services change often, but for the most part they all do the same thing, which is managing consolidated debt.

You go to the loan servicer’s website to set your monthly payment on your new loan, check for updates, including when you’re eligible for loan forgiveness, and get your tax documents. Your credit service will send you reminders when it’s time to verify again.

The secret is simple: order a student loan repayment plan and your loan will be forgiven at the end of the plan (within 10-25 years).

Tip: The larger your family size, the lower your monthly payment. Reduce your income: The lower your payments.

Pay as you go (PAYE), income-based repayment (IBR), IBR for new borrowers and income-contingent repayment (ICR) are all great options that offer loan forgiveness.

Remember; just because you’re presented with all of these options when you connect to StudentLoans.Gov doesn’t mean you’re certain you qualify for all of them.

You can only get IBR for new borrowers if you are a new borrower on or after 1 July 2014.

First, just like with any other debt settlement. Next, you need to use an income-contingent payment plan (ICR). This is the only payment plan you are eligible for.

In this example, I choose the Pay As You Earn option or IBR for new borrowers because both options offer loan forgiveness after 240 payments and zero monthly payments.

Your earnings are based on your most recent tax return or your 30-day 90-day pay report (go with whichever is lower).

In this example above, the most attractive program for a new borrower would be pay-as-you-go or IBR, since both options would give you $119,222.02 in forgiveness and a lower monthly payment of $65.92.
