The Best Ways To Get Rid Of Plantar Warts (verrucas)

Plantar warts are small growths caused by certain strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) that usually appear on the bottom of your feet, especially the heel or the bottom of your toes.

Sometimes these warts can cause pain or discomfort when putting weight on the foot while standing or walking. If left untreated, they can become larger, more painful, and more susceptible to infection.

Although caused by HPV, plantar warts are not considered a sexually transmitted infection because the specific types that cause them are different from the types of sexually transmitted HPV.

However, HPV is contagious, so plantar warts can be transmitted from person to person via a surface or object carrying the virus or through direct skin contact.

American Journal Of Case Reports

According to Nelya Lobkova, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist with Step Up Footcare, plantar warts are very common, and most cases occur in children and teens. People with weakened immunity are also at increased risk.

It is important to note that plantar warts usually go away on their own, but it may take more than a year for them to disappear completely. If you don’t want to wait, opt for a gentle treatment like tape or cryotherapy first before resorting to a more aggressive treatment that could lead to permanent scarring.

By applying a piece of duct tape directly to the wart, the glue can gradually remove the wart in layers, Lobkova says.

In this method, Lobkova recommends keeping the tape on for three days, removing it and scraping the skin with a pumice stone, and then reapplying the new tape after 10-12 hours.

How effective it is: “The skin turns over every 28 days, so this is the earliest you can expect to see changes this way,” Lobkova says. “However, duct tape alone has rarely been successful in treating plantar warts in my experience.”

Cryotherapy is a freezing technique that involves applying a solution that creates a blister around the tissue. When the blister dries, the wart may fall off.

According to Lobkova, this can be done at home using over-the-counter tools like Compound W Freeze Off and Dr. Scholl freezes away – or at the doctor’s office.

Household kits contain dimethyl ether with propane, which you apply directly to the rabbit. The doctor will most likely use liquid nitrogen, which Lobkova says is stronger and therefore may be more effective.

Treating Stubborn Plantar Warts

Because cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen can be painful, the doctor will often numb the area with an anesthetic before cutting the skin and applying the freezing agent with a syringe or cotton ball.

You can expect the area around the wart to be a little sore for a few days after treatment, Lobkova says.

How effective it is: It often takes several treatments to get rid of plantar warts with cryotherapy, and most people won’t see improvements for three to four weeks or more, Lobkova says. Research has shown that cryotherapy has a success rate of up to 25% in treating plantar warts.

Medications containing salicylic acid, lactic acid and trichloroacetic acid basically dissolve and wipe away the wart layer by layer. These are available in over-the-counter strength form.

Over-the-counter products are usually a patch or liquid that you apply to your rabbit daily after soaking in warm water to soften and relax the skin.

For best results, cover the wart with a sock or bandage after applying the solution, wash it the next morning, and then exfoliate the area with an emery file or pumice stone. This method isn’t usually painful, but it can sometimes cause irritation or mild discomfort, says Bruce Pinker, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon at Progressive Foot Care.

How effective is it: A 2019 review found that salicylic acid was as effective as cryotherapy in treating plantar warts. It usually takes at least two weeks and up to several months to see results with this method, according to Lobkova.

Pinker says he doesn’t recommend surgery for plantar warts unless they persist several months after trying other conventional treatments.

Breaking Down The Different Treatment Options For Plantar Warts

The surgery involves removing the wart, Lobkova says, and although your doctor will numb the area first, she notes that local anesthetic injections can be painful. In some cases, you may be anesthetized for this procedure.

Additionally, she says, scars can sometimes cut through the dermis layer of the skin and cause pain when pressed for a period of time after surgery.

In most cases, the skin must be re-stitched, Pinker says, and the healing process is monitored through several follow-up visits.

“Surgical excision is not a standard treatment for larger plantar warts, as there are many effective, less invasive options these days,” Lobkova says.

Plantar Warts: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment And More

Immunotherapy involves applying or injecting locally a chemical, such as a Candida antigen, with the goal of stimulating an immune response that targets and eliminates plantar warts.

Some of the most common solutions, according to Lobkova, include imiquimod and fluorouracil. All of these medications require a prescription, but while the injections must be given in a doctor’s office, topical creams can be used at home.

Treatment is two weeks apart, and it may take two to three months to see results, Lobkova says.

Immunotherapy is usually only considered in severe cases when other treatments haven’t worked, Pinker says. In addition, experts point out that it is usually combined with acids, lasers or other treatments to speed up results.

How effective it is: A small 2017 study found that immunotherapy was more effective than cryotherapy in treating plantar warts: 76.7% of patients were cured with the former, but 56.7% were cured with the latter.

If you’re dealing with a large, stubborn wart that’s not responding to other methods, laser treatments can also be used to burn off the top layer of the wart, Lobkova says. Since these treatments can be painful, they are almost always performed under local anesthesia.

While Lobkova says the cost will vary depending on the type of laser used, the size of the ring, and whether or not your insurance covers it, it’s important to note that it’s one of the most affordable options at about $360 for three sessions. You can expect results within three to four weeks of treatment, Lobkova says.

How effective is it: A small 2018 study found that the number of laser sessions needed to remove plantar warts was fewer compared to cryotherapy. However, note that there is a small risk of scarring with these treatments.

Enhanced Treatment For Stubborn Warts And Pediatric Molluscum

Keep in mind that you’re more likely to get plantar warts if you already have a history of them, Pinker says.

Once plantar warts are gone, podiatrists say there are some things you can do to prevent them from appearing again, such as changing your shoes and socks daily to keep your feet clean and dry. To prevent infection.

“If home remedies don’t work after several applications, seek the advice of a medical professional,” Pinker says.
