How To Get Rid Of Warts: Topical, Laser Therapy, & More

Plantar warts, caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), are small growths that usually appear on the bottom of the feet, especially on the heels or under the toes.

Sometimes these warts can cause pain or discomfort when you put weight on your foot while standing or walking. If left untreated, they can become larger, more painful, and more prone to infection.

Although leg warts are caused by HPV, they are not considered a sexually transmitted infection; because the specific types that cause them are different from the sexually transmitted types of HPV.

However, HPV is contagious, so plantar warts can be transmitted to a person through a surface or object carrying the virus or through direct skin-to-skin contact.

According to Nelia Lobkova, board certified podiatrist at Step Up Footcare, plantar warts are quite common, mostly found in children and teenagers. People with weakened immune systems are also at greater risk.

It is important to remember that foot warts usually go away on their own, but it can take more than a year for them to completely disappear. If you don’t want to wait, opt for a gentler treatment like taping or cryotherapy before moving on to a more aggressive treatment that can lead to permanent scarring.

Lobkova says that by placing a piece of tape over the wart, the glue can gradually remove the wart in layers.

For this method, Lobkova recommends keeping the tape for three days, removing it and scraping the skin with a pumice stone, and applying a new tape again after 10-12 hours.

Plantar Warts: 6 Treatments And Prevention

How effective is it? “Skin renews itself every 28 days, so that’s the shortest time we can expect changes with this method,” says Ms. Lobkova. “However, in my experience, glue alone is rarely successful in treating plantar warts.

Cryotherapy is a freezing method that uses a solution that causes blisters to form around the frog. Once the blister dries up, the wart may fall off.

According to Lobkova, it is similar to Compound W Freeze Off and Dr. This can be done at home or at the doctor’s office with over-the-counter kits like Scholl’s Freeze Away.

Home kits contain dimethyl ether and propane, which you apply directly to the warts. A doctor is more likely to use liquid nitrogen, which Lobkova says is stronger and therefore may be more effective.

Fast & Effective Wart Treatment

Because liquid nitrogen cryotherapy can be painful, the doctor usually numbs the area with an anesthetic before cutting the skin and applying a coolant with a spray or cotton swab.

For a few days after treatment, you can expect the area around the frog to be slightly tender, says Lobkova.

How it works Lobkova says it usually takes several treatments to get rid of plantar warts with cryotherapy, and most people won’t notice an improvement for three to four weeks or more. Studies have shown that cryotherapy cures 25% of plantar warts.

Medicines containing salicylic acid, lactic acid, and trichloroacetic acid work primarily by dissolving warts and removing them in one layer. They are available both over-the-counter and prescription.

Over-the-counter products are usually a poultice or liquid that you apply daily after soaking the wart in warm water to soften and loosen the skin.

For best results, cover the wart with a stocking or bandage after applying the solution, wash it the next morning, and then scrub the area with an emery board or pumice stone. This method isn’t usually painful, but it can sometimes cause minor irritation or discomfort, says Bruce Pinker, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon at Progressive Foot Care.

How effective is it: A 2019 review found salicylic acid to be as effective as cryotherapy for treating plantar warts. According to Lobkova, it usually takes at least two weeks and up to several months before you see results from this method.

Surgery is recommended for plantar warts only if they persist for several months after other conventional treatments, Pinker says.

Warts are excised during surgery, Lobkova says, and although the doctor usually numbs the area first, local anesthetic injections can be painful. In some cases, a sedative may be prescribed for the procedure.

In addition, he said, sometimes cutting the dermis can cause scarring that can cause pain with weight bearing for some time after surgery.

In most cases, the skin needs to be sutured and the healing process monitored over several follow-up visits, Pinker says.

“Surgical removal is no longer the typical treatment for plantar warts, as there are many effective, less invasive options available today,” says Lobkova.

Warts Treatment In Hurghada

Immunotherapy involves the topical application or injection of a chemical such as Candida antigen to stimulate an immune response that targets and clears the plantar warts.

According to Lobkova, some of the most common solutions include imiquimod and fluorouracil. All these drugs require a prescription. However, injections must be given in a doctor’s office, while topical creams can be used at home.

Lobkova says treatments are given at two-week intervals, and it can take two to three months to see results.

Pinker says immunotherapy is usually only considered in severe cases when other treatments haven’t worked. Additionally, experts say it’s often combined with acids, lasers or other treatments to speed up results.

How effective is it? A small 2017 study found immunotherapy to be more effective than cryotherapy for treating plantar warts, with 76.7% of patients treated with the former and 56.7% with the latter. from:

If you’re dealing with a large, stubborn wart that doesn’t respond to other methods, laser treatment can also be used to burn off the top layer of the wart, Lobkova says. Because these treatments can be painful, they are almost always performed under local anesthesia.

While Lobkova says the cost will vary depending on the type of laser used, the size of the wart and whether your insurance covers it, it’s important to note that this is one of the more expensive options, costing about $360 for three sessions. Lobkova says you can see results three to four weeks after treatment.

How effective is it?A small 2018 study found that laser leg wart removal required fewer sessions compared to cryotherapy. However, be aware that there is a slight risk of scarring with these treatments.

Plantar Warts: Symptoms, Causes, And Treatment

Keep in mind that you’re at higher risk for plantar warts if you already have a history of them, Pinker says.

Podiatrists say that once plantar warts go away, there are a few things you can do to prevent them from recurring, such as changing shoes and socks daily to keep feet clean and dry to prevent infection.

Plantar warts are hard growths caused by the HPV virus that appear on the soles of the feet; Although they can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful, they are usually not serious and can even be treated with over-the-counter medication.
