There are many reasons why you might want to remove the couch from your RV. For us, it was necessary to start from the floor. We also plan to make a custom sofa for the RV, so ours had to come out anyway. Regardless of your reason for removing the couch from your RV, I hope the information below helps.

Clever Ways To Refresh An Old Sofa

This post will describe how we removed the couch from our 2008 Tiffin Allegro Open Road 32la van. Almost every van is different, so use what you can below to accomplish your task, but keep in mind that some steps may differ depending on your specific model.

As a simple task, and mostly it is, but unfortunately for us, installing the door required disassembly first.

We have found that most RVs are completely built and finished BEFORE the exterior walls are built. Because of this, removing some items can be a bit more difficult than expected. Also, when driving on the road, almost everything is fastened with screws or bolts for safety reasons.

We raised the question of how to get a sofa out of your RV in one of our RV Facebook groups to see if there was another way to get the sofa bed out of our RV. However, when we realized that it wouldn’t fit through doors or windows, we knew that disassembling was our only option.

If you don’t believe your couch will fit through the RV door, you can remove the base and handles before separating the couch from the RV floor. If the sofa is still attached to the floor, this can make it easier to remove the legs and arms.

If you have a sofa bed in your RV, you’ll quickly find that it comes with a TON of screws. The good news is that you don’t have to delete them all. You should only focus on the ones that attach it to the RV itself and the ones that remove the arms and front panel.

When removing the nuts and bolts that hold the couch together, we always label the plastic bag to make sure we don’t lose any of the pieces we’ll need for assembly.

First you need to take a ratchet and a set of socket wrenches. You’ll also need the 14mm and 13mm sockets to pull the sofa bed out of the sofa bed (although the sofas may vary depending on your bus, so it’s best to bring the whole set).

How To Get A Sofa Through A Doorway?

Once we got the tools we needed, we unfolded the sofa bed and folded the headrest all the way down (as shown in the image below).

At this point I climbed right up to where the sofa bed would normally be and then loosened all the screws. We needed a 14mm socket with our sofa. After removing all the screws securing the couch to the floor of the van, I got out, trying not to scratch myself on the bed wire.

This is when we realized the sofa had seat belts as they were hidden under the sofa. Fortunately, we were only driving by ourselves and not sitting on the sofa while driving the caravan down the road.

You can remove the seat belts by loosening the screw on the floor, then reaching into the storage area below and undoing the nut completely.

Remove The Sofa From Your Rv

When it came to removing the legs and arms from our sofa, all the screws were 13mm (meaning you need to get a 13mm socket or whatever fits your sofa).

The footboard is the easiest part of the couch to remove, so if you know your couch won’t fit through the door, that’s where I’d start. While the bed is still fully inside the couch, look down along the interior between the front of the hidden bed and the footboard, which is a few inches away.

There should be four screws, two in each corner, you can tell they are for the base plate when you notice they are the only ones that attach to it.

Using a ratchet and a 13mm socket wrench, remove all screws. After removal, the heel plate should lift easily.

Removing the hands is a little more difficult. The couch was the easiest thing for me to do while doing this job. Since every couch is likely different, it’s important to pay close attention to what each screw is attached to.

You will see many screws as the metal frame of the bed is also held together. If you look between the places where the sofa is attached to the wood of the armrests, you will see which screws are attached and which are not. You will want to loosen and remove any screws that attach to the wood of the arms.

When we removed the arms of our couch, there were a total of six screws, three for each arm.

Now that the hands, heels and seat belts are removed, you can take them to where you want to store them.

Then we focused on removing the sofa back. It’s as easy as removing the nuts that hold it to the back of the hidden bed.

Once the pieces of wood were separated from the bed mechanism, we were able to successfully remove the couch from your RV. It was quite heavy so you may need help to carry it out the door.
