If you’re like me, you remember being doused with dirty, tarry shampoo when your elementary school had a lice outbreak. Even for natural moms, it’s easy to think it’s time to pull out the gun. Who wants to struggle with these things for weeks, right?

Using a device similar to a hair dryer, he heated all parts of my scalp at 30-second intervals. Lice and their eggs (called nits) need moisture to thrive, so this step will help dry out and kill many of them.

Earlier in the day, I used a blow dryer on my daughter, who has waist-length hair, to achieve the same goal. I asked if it would work and he said yes. Since a hair dryer does not heat up as much as a device used by professionals, I used it longer – a total of about 20 minutes on medium heat. I also used a curling iron to “pick” the hair off her scalp because I really hate lice. It’s been a week and it seems to have worked after just one treatment.

The coat is then combed to remove dead lice and eggs, as well as those that were not killed in the first stage. Professional motorcyclists often use the Nit Free Terminator lice comb to remove lice and eggs.

After comparing the metal comb we found at our local store with the Terminator comb, I ordered the Terminator. Missing an egg or two can cause a repeat, so I wanted to have it on hand in case the comb I was using didn’t quite do the job. It’s also good to have on hand in case of future problems, although I hope there won’t be any.

Quick note: my nit picker used a comb on dry hair. After trying both methods on my daughter, I prefer the dry approach – it seems to grab the eggs better.

One study found that coating the hair/scalp with a mixture of mineral oil and other chemicals was 97.6% effective at killing lice. Personally, I wouldn’t use mineral oil, polysorbate 80, etc., but I would definitely try oils like coconut or olive.

Lice can hold their breath for up to eight hours, so some people recommend covering the covered hair with a shower cap and leaving it overnight.

However, I’m not sure this is necessary when the infusion step is combined with essential oil (please read the safety note below before using on children!). According to this analysis, eucalyptus oil is more than twice as effective at killing lice as permethrin and pyrethrum, so adding the oil to your hair is believed to speed up lice killing. The expert I spoke to suggested leaving the product soaked in peppermint oil for at least 30 minutes before washing. My husband took a shower cap for this step to avoid accidentally staining the furniture with oil.

Drowning kills active lice but does not affect the nits, so if you rely on it without the first step, you may have to repeat the process for several weeks. Lice don’t lay eggs until they are about 10 days old, so if you treat them every 7 days, they won’t be able to breed anymore. After the initial treatment, you should undergo two more treatments one week apart.

Safety Note: Some oils, such as eucalyptus and peppermint, contain high concentrations of cineole 1.8, which may adversely affect temperature receptors in children’s lungs and cause breathing problems. For this reason, I only used oils safe for children, recommended by professional lice repellents – tea tree and lavender.

In one study, a lotion containing 10% tea tree oil and 1% lavender oil was 97.6% effective in killing lice, while insecticides such as pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide were only 25% effective. More on how I used them below.
