Over-the-counter options like Nix, Rid, A-200 and Pronto and over-the-counter brands like Ovide or Kwell contain neurotoxins that kill lice by attacking the central nervous system.
Permethrin and pyrethrum, found over the counter, are neurotoxins associated with “side effects such as headaches, ringing in the ears, nausea, tingling in the fingers and toes, problems with breathing, and other nervous system problems.” .” (1) The Asthma Society of Canada adds that “Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of pesticides, especially those with a history of allergies or asthma.” (2)
Prescription options use stronger pesticides. For example, lindane, found in Kwell, is associated with seizures, slurred speech, mental confusion and tremors. In fact, “the use of lindane drugs is banned in at least 52 countries around the world. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the use of lindane, citing central nervous system toxicity and cases of seizures in children, as well as low efficacy. (3)
“Emerging pesticides like lindane, even in very small amounts, are associated with many adverse health effects in children,” said Mark Miller, MD, MPH, director of the UCSF Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit. . “Lice and scabies control options should not include this neurotoxic insecticide.” (4)

You see, lice are all the rage these days. And by seriously bad, I mean resistance to pesticide-based products. According to a study published in the Journal of Medical Entomology, 99.6% of lice are found in the U.S. at the time of the study they were “big lice.” Like bacterial superbugs, they are unaffected by traditional treatments.
Last week I found out that one of my children has head lice. Since it spread quickly to family members I decided to treat everyone, including myself. My hair is long and thick, so separating it into sections that go through a nit comb (more on that in a second) is no easy task. Because I love my husband and I want to love him, I decided to call a professional nitpicker for help with that step.
While working with me he shared details about his process, which he says works 99.99% of the time. Here are his three steps:
Using a device like a heat dryer, he heated each part of my skin for 30 seconds. Lice and their eggs (called nits) need moisture to grow, so this step will help dehydrate and kill most of them.

Earlier that day I used the hair dryer on my daughter, who has waist length hair, to achieve the same goal. I asked him if that was possible and he said yes. Since hair dryers are not as hot as the device used by professionals, I use them for a long time – about 20 minutes in total on medium heat. I also used a curling iron to “flatiron” the hair on his head for good measure, because I hate lice. It’s been a week and we seem to have been successful with just one treatment.
Next, the hair is combed to remove dead lice and eggs, as well as any that were not killed in the first step. Professional “nitpickers” often use the Nit Free Terminator Lice Comb to remove lice and eggs.
After comparing the steel comb I could find at our local store to the Terminator comb, I ordered the Terminator. Losing an egg or two can lead to relapse, so I like to have it if the camp I’m using doesn’t do the job perfectly. It’s also nice to have future stories, no matter where I am now that we are gone.

Natural Remedies For Lice
A quick note: My nitpicker uses a dry hair comb. After trying both my daughter prefers the dry method – it seems to handle the eggs better.
Another study found that covering the hair/scalp with a mixture of mineral oil and other chemicals reduced head lice by 97.6%. Personally, I wouldn’t use mineral oil, polysorbate 80, etc., but I would definitely try an oil like coconut or olive.
Lice can hold air for up to eight hours, so some people recommend covering infested hair with a shower cap and leaving it on overnight.
I’m not sure that’s necessary, though, if the steaming step is combined with an essential oil (see the safety note below before using on children!). According to this review, eucalyptus essential oil is twice as effective as permethrin and pyrethrum in killing lice, so adding it to hair oils is believed to speed up their demise. One nitpicker I spoke to recommended leaving a product infused with peppermint essential oil on for at least 30 minutes before washing off. My husband has shower caps to use for this step so we don’t accidentally get oil on the furniture.

Breathing kills active lice, but it does not affect the hair, so if you rely on it without using the first step, you will have to repeat the process in a few weeks. Lice do not lay eggs until they are about 10 years old, so if you treat every 7 days you are killing their ability to reproduce. After the first treatment, two more treatments a week apart should do the trick.
Safety note: Some oils such as eucalyptus and peppermint have a high concentration of 1.8 cineole, which can have a negative effect on the heat receptors in the lungs of children and cause breathing problems. For that reason, I use the only baby-proof oils that expert nitpickers recommend for use on lice – tea tree and lavender.
In one study, an ointment containing 10% tea tree and 1% lavender oil was 97.6% effective in killing lice, while insecticides such as pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide were only 25% effective. More on how I use it below.
One thing nitpicker said about lice is that lice really hate hair products with essential oils, so a few days after treating my sons I applied a homemade hair gel with equal parts tea tree and lavender.

For my daughter, I add oil to 1/4 cup of vinegar and mix them together, and add 1/4 cup of water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle on her hair every day.
If you are wondering how much essential oil to use during the treatment of constipation and what other options to consider, this section is for you. Below are combinations of natural ingredients that I personally use and/or recommend to friends.
Some people believe that applying vinegar to the skin/hair before it dries helps loosen the “glue” that holds the lice eggs together. I use a glass spray bottle to apply the vinegar to my daughters hair, then let it dry naturally before doing Step #1 (heating the scalp with a blowdryer.)
Some newer products use enzyme-based soaps that help loosen eggs and potentially kill active lice by destroying their exoskeleton. Certain products, such as Lice B Gone, are marketed for that purpose. Enzyme-based soaps are used before or after step 1 as described above.

Another option I’ve heard mentioned is diatomaceous earth. However, since it dries out the scalp and hair – perhaps to the point of becoming brittle – I only use it as a last resort. And yet, I carefully apply it to the scalp and the hair immediately surrounding the scalp instead of the rest of my hair.
Epsom salt mixed with water dehydrates and kills lice. To use, apply 2-3 tablespoons of epsom salt dissolved in 1/4 cup of warm water (or more if needed) to the scalp/hair.
Let the mixture sit until the hair is completely dry, then rinse before starting step 1. There is no official research to support this method, only stories from parents. However, you have to shoot.
