Lice are immune to everything that has worked in the past. You may remember your mother using regular lice treatment or mayonnaise and that will do the trick. New generations of head lice are not killed by this treatment, which is why lice today are called “super lice” because they are immune to this treatment.

I have treated thousands of people for lice at my lice center and let me tell you, I do not do over the counter lice treatments.

Many people struggle with lice because they focus on killing lice and not getting rid of lice!

If you want to get rid of lice, you need to address all 3 lice problems:

Vaseline For Lice: Does It Work?

The best way to get rid of lice is to solve all 3 of these problems at once, which I teach in a step-by-step video process.

After fiddling with over-the-counter remedies, many parents are desperate to find a home remedy that works. What about Vaseline?

Researchers tested Vaseline (a brand of petroleum jelly) with 5 other effective home remedies for head lice, to see how it fared.

In the study, petroleum jelly killed up to 62% of head lice. It beats out many other home remedies like mayonnaise, olive oil, butter, and vinegar. It’s better than even the most popular over the counter treatments. But still, 62% is not an impressive number, especially with all the negative aspects of Vaseline, which we will discuss in this article.

First let’s get something straight… nits and lice eggs are the same thing! Don’t make it harder than it needs to be. The two terms (lice and lice eggs) will be used interchangeably in this article.

Lice eggs are small (about the size of a poppy seed) and attach well to the hair. If you don’t look closely, you miss them. Lice eggs and lice are often confused with each other, but some of the key differences are that lice eggs are tear-shaped and attached to the hair.

A sign that what you are looking for is a nit is that the nit does not go away, swell, or clear. With the exception of a high-quality lice comb, the only way to remove lice eggs from the hair follicles is to squeeze them between two fingers and pull them along the hairline.

There is evidence that vaseline can prevent many lice eggs from hatching if left on the head for 10 days.

It’s crazy, who would? Although, it will probably take a long time to get all the Vaseline out of your baby’s hair….

When you first see lice, you have adult lice, baby lice, and lice eggs (also called nits).

Vaseline is not a little sticky. Applying Vaseline to your scalp and hair is like chewing gum with your hand and applying it to your hair. Because Vaseline is thick and does not dissolve in water, once you apply Vaseline to your hair, it will take weeks to remove it.

If you’ve already made the mistake of putting Vaseline on your child’s hair, I feel bad for you. These are the best things I have found to help.

The Vaseline lice treatment requires you to wet your hair with Vaseline, put on a plastic cap, and then let your child sleep in it. This is really dangerous and can lead to death. Here is a small snippet of a news story about a disaster caused by a home remedy for lice gone wrong:

The girl was left alone and apparently fell asleep, and a bag was placed over her face, suffocating her.

Vaseline does not work. Covering your hair with Vaseline and then trying to carefully remove it from your hair is a complete waste of time and energy. Better to spend your time, energy and money on treatments that work!

If you are dying to treat lice with vaseline, here are the steps, although I do not recommend it because it is dangerous, and you will spend hours trying to remove it from your hair. And, it doesn’t remove lice.

And leaving Vaseline in your child’s hair for 10 days hoping it will help with the lice eggs is crazy! Vaseline is so hard to wash out of your hair that your baby will look like a wet baby for weeks! No thanks.
