How Long Does It Take To Join The Army – Over the last month I have been doing a series of podcasts for one of my regular university partners – Edinburgh Napier University. The series is aimed at university teachers, and while the material is very educational, this is no excuse for being boring.

So I have the task of putting the episodes together in a really polished and professional way and making sure the content is as interesting as possible.

Of course, it’s not just the production that makes them – it’s the main story – but without varnish it won’t have the same effect. Although in this scene I wanted to tell the story and finish part of the interview, the story is also relevant here. So I spent my time on both – polishing the product and the narrative.

“How long does it take to produce a startup podcast or series?” In light of the unclear answer to that question, I thought I would tell the story of one of these episodes.

I kept pretty close records of my time in my college series, so I knew exactly what everyone was getting into. We hope this gives you an idea of ​​the process, time and effort involved and whether it is worth it.

Edinburgh Napier offers an MA course called Blended and Online Education designed to teach university teachers how to create better online courses for their students. I used to teach a course when I was in college and that’s what first got me into podcasting, probably half a decade ago.

To be honest, it was a shame to hear them for the first time in over 5 years! My presentation style was sloppy, the sound quality was poor, and the production value was almost non-existent. Well, I thought I’d take everything I’ve learned over the last 5 years and make these hybrids.

The series consists of 12 episodes, each episode covers a topic in the field of technology-assisted learning. This means, simply put, that it has nothing to do with online learning. For example, using wikis and blogs for students to submit assignments, learning as part of an online group, using assessment forums and more.

My task was to restore 4 beautiful outdated rooms and create new ones to replace 2 outdated rooms that could not be saved. I think it’s worth talking about one of the new shows here – after all, there aren’t many people who ‘relive’ old podcast episodes!

Disclaimer: I have no doubt that Gimlet Media and Sarah Koenig spent a lot of time developing a startup podcast or series. Gimlet has a whole team that does most of the research, interviews, production, etc. But I think that’s a good estimate for us that we don’t run a full production company like Gimlet.

The first new episode was about MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses to you and me). This is a topic I know very well, but it still took some research to find good stats and make sure I was up to date. During this time I wrote an introductory script – about a minute – introducing the subject and talking about what we were going to cover. All this took less than an hour.

For this episode, I wanted to interview just one person who was a leader in the field. I found her through several recommendations, contacted her and arranged a date for the shoot. All this probably took about 20 minutes in total.

The interview itself was very clear. I spent some time writing a few questions in advance to prepare. I usually already have 5 or 6 bulleted questions, but I don’t think I have to stick to them strictly. When the time came, I Skyped the examiner, clicked on my voice recorder (recording on my trusty H4n with my repair), and then went through the questions I had prepared.

The interview lasted about 30 minutes (longer than I planned, but Amy provided some great insight). Including managing the resulting audio file, everything took about 50 minutes.

I have found that transcription is very important when trying to edit a good length audio interview and turn it into a good narrative. There is no better way to jump around the content and highlight important parts, change the order, write your own comments, and create an overall editorial plan.

I tried to do it by listening to the audio and taking notes, but it’s really hard to keep everything in my head – I just need the text in front of me to make connections between different pieces of content. The catch is that your last scene may not have all the pieces in the same order as the first recording – your examiner will go back to previous points, skip to future questions, and generally delete the all your plans well established. . You need that copy to tie everything together and make sure you’re choosing the best quotes for all the topics you want to cover.

I went through the transcript the first time and highlighted all the parts I thought were good. I also stamped them with topics for the class itself. Now I was ready for the first part of the edit.

This took about an hour and 10 minutes in total – that is for an interview of just under 30 minutes. And that doesn’t count that I made a copy that my assistant made for me. Technically it was still about 3 hours, but you have to take that business – nobody wants to copy… it costs about $30 most copy services.

I won’t go into detail about the editing process itself, although I may cover that in a future post if I’m interested. Come to think of it, I have a few tricks I’ve learned to apply the necessary FX to get all the parts in the right format and produce the polish we want. So if you want, let me know.

Anyway, the first step for me is cutting. This means I get all the parts I want to keep in one place in Audacity, so all I have to do now is record my own narrative and write it all together in the correct order. So I go through the audio of the interview, break the song into relevant parts and organize them as I always do. This took a total of 30 minutes.

The next step for me is the narration, and that starts with the script. I went back to the transcript and organized the sections into topics based on the labels I described earlier. This was the starting order and I started working on it by writing short links between each section.

I will try to summarize the last part and link it to the next one, as well as link to the previous points if possible. To me, that’s how you tell a story in an interview—you’re making sure you’re building something all the time. Take what the person asking the question said, add the main point to the story so far, and then hint at what’s to come to build some anticipation. It’s hard, but it’s worth it. And it makes it more interesting to listen to than just an interview, which is often a mixture of ideas, albeit good ideas.

Okay, now it does all the work. I recorded my parts in Audacity, which didn’t take long. My narration is usually recorded in less than 5 minutes. After all, I didn’t want to steal the show!
