With Biden Student Loan Forgiveness Blocked, Feds Seek Other Options

DOE officials are recommending that borrowers apply for student loan forgiveness by Nov. 15 to receive emergency relief before the pandemic payment break expires on Dec. 31 and interest starts running again.

However, some advocates like Pierce worry that may not be possible given the federal government’s track record in dealing with the debt.

The DOE has not released details of the plan for borrowers whose applications are still being processed at the time the payment break ends after December.

Starting Jan. 1, regular student loan payments will resume after a three-year moratorium first enacted under President Donald Trump during the COVID-19 outbreak. If the borrower’s entire balance is not removed from the federal forgiveness program, interest begins again on the remaining balance.
