. Students sometimes use this as a free pass to avoid thinking, taking risks, or answering a question they could have answered with little effort.

Dear Students, I Want You To Fail: A Message For The First Day Of Class

Wouldn’t it be great to eliminate the phrase “I don’t know” from your classroom? I don’t think it’s unacceptable for a student to literally not know. However, when a student realizes that he does not know something, it should be a transition to understanding, not a cessation of thinking.

I often mark different answers as IDK answers, even if the students don’t actually say the words. Slouched shoulders, a blank stare, or what I call “arched eyebrows” are signs that a student will not do well on any reading comprehension test.

The growth mindset movement seems to have overshadowed the concept of persistence. We see meme after meme celebrating the power of silence. I always support students who develop a growth mindset when faced with challenges. However, IDK just adding “not yet” won’t indicate the next steps. Well – you don’t know yet. What will you do to fill that void? Without an action plan to fix IDK, y-e-t is just another three letter word with nothing behind it.

Instead of students just adding “more” to “I don’t know,” we help students further develop as learners by eliminating IDK altogether and teaching students how to approach those moments. That is even more inappropriate. How to build.

To remove IDK, we need to ban its use in the classroom so that students no longer see it as an alternative.

Any way to physically, visually, or verbally eliminate a taboo phrase in the classroom is the first step toward eliminating IDK.

When students are faced with a challenge that prevents them from answering easily, many do not know how to answer, so they usually say “I don’t know”. But there are many reasons why a student might give IDK—and it’s not always because the student really doesn’t understand.

Because of this, it is difficult for us, as teachers, to know how to respond. Feedback that doesn’t match the student’s IDK can make things worse for everyone. For example, if the teacher intends to make the students wait because they think we are giving them more time to think, we will wait too long if the student does not hear the question at all. Lack of background knowledge creates challenges for both students and teachers, so start by helping students clarify what’s behind their “I don’t know” answer.

How Can You Ease Back To School Anxiety And Stress?

Brainstorm with students all the right reasons why they used “IDK” as an answer. You will hear answers like:

After helping students identify the reasons behind their IDK, they can replace the generic “I don’t know” with more specific language, phrases, or actions to describe the obstacle they are facing. This pace makes learning and engagement difficult. Posting these collaboratively created alternatives for IDK in the classroom can serve as suggestions when students want to use limited phrases as a reminder for more effective responses.

The last row of this chart is significant because it gives students the opportunity to take more risks, the qualifying statements that many of us use as adults to save face if our current thinking turns out to be wrong. Sharing these options with students may replace the IDK with verbal notification that the student is withdrawing from the program.

On the way to mastery, we often encounter learning gaps. Allowing IDK to act as a cognitive barrier stops learning. If we can identify these moments as barriers to learning that require us to find a more open path, then we will help students move forward. Making “I don’t know” a turning point from uncertainty to gaining new knowledge will give IDK a new meaning in our schools.

A treatment plan for school anxiety may need to address the symptoms of the condition as well as the external factors that cause the anxiety. Let’s look at the causes of school anxiety and some strategies to help children feel comfortable while learning.

If your child refuses to get ready for school or is often sick or nauseous in the morning before school, it could be a sign that he is dealing with school anxiety.

You do not have to eliminate your child’s physical symptoms; In fact, empathizing with morning stomach pain can make your child feel more confident about expressing their feelings to you. Try to describe in language how your child is feeling – is he sick to his stomach or afraid? Explain that sometimes stress can make your body sick.

Although they obviously can’t miss school every day, sometimes kids need a “mental health day” just like adults. Your child will likely look back on these moments when deciding how to take care of their own mental health later on. Although these stages can be frustrating at the moment, remember that your child is dealing with big emotions that are completely new to him – compassion will pay off in the short and long term.

Creating A Student Led Classroom

As students grow older, their anxiety manifests as behavior that avoids extracurricular activities. Signs of anxiety in middle and high school students vary from culture to family, but

Although it’s easy to think of anxiety as an adult problem, many anxiety disorders can begin in childhood. Let’s look at some of the most popular.

If your child cries when getting off the bus, clings to your car door, or refuses to get on the school bus, taking them to school can be traumatic. Separation anxiety is best dealt with before the child goes into a state of panic.

Consider providing a photo of your family to take your child to school, or ask if your child can bring stuffed animals or other safety items. Don’t delay the message; Establish a quick goodbye ritual with a physical action (such as a short hug) and a soothing phrase (“You know I’ll see you at four!”). A positive affirmation (I am brave and loved!) that the two of you say together can also be helpful.

I Stepped Out Of My Comfort Zone”

You can reach out to your child’s teacher to let them know that you are trying to help them overcome separation anxiety.

There are many ways to help your child deal with school anxiety. Many of them act out of compassion and empathy rather than imposing strict rules and punishments.

Teachers, parents, and nurses can cause anxiety at school, even when students don’t know how to say they feel anxious. If you are concerned that a child in your care is struggling with anxiety at school, you will need to communicate well to try to identify possible causes or underlying issues.

When a child is acting out, one of the most helpful things you can do is be curious. Discovering what your child feels and fears can show you the best way to help him. Talk about emotions and mental health
