This year alone I found five ticks on me and my two children. We have a relatively small yard in a small town, but still see lots of ticks around.

I have been searching for a natural homemade tick repellant for months. I have seen many recipes for home remedies for ticks, but very few refer to ingredients and research. I’m always hesitant to try something until I have enough research to back it up, especially when it comes to my kids.

Homemade Tick Repellent: Spray That Works And Is Backed By Research!

Essential oils are often excellent insect repellents, but I haven’t heard much research about ticks. I know that geranium essential oil is effective against mites thanks to this great article from the Tusserand Institute.

The article cites several studies that show that geranium essential oil can be an effective home remedy for ticks. The study tested 10 different chemotypes of geranium essential oil and found them to be highly effective.

Another oil mentioned in this research is cedar wood essential oil. This makes sense to me because many people use pine chips as a natural tick repellant in their gardens and yards. A 2014 study found that Virginia pine can repel ants and kill ticks.

Cedarwood essential oil is also safe to use around children, making it an excellent homemade tick repellant.

I then turned to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for natural tick repellents. They have an excellent article detailing some natural tick repellants and the research that supports their effectiveness. It contains essential oil of garlic. I have never used garlic essential oil before and I am a certified aroma therapist! Honestly, the smell alone is enough to scare me. However, this article states that many people use garlic in their lawn care. Another study I found here also confirmed the effectiveness of this oil against ticks.

Garlic essential oil can cause skin irritation, so use with caution and is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. It also inhibits blood clotting, so people on blood thinners should not use it. I feel comfortable using garlic essential oil with this homemade mite repellant recipe because I plan to apply it to my clothes instead of my skin.

Although essential oils are wonderful, if you want to apply them to your skin or as a spray, you must dilute them with a carrier oil. I know I want to make fabric spray because we walk so much. Oil and water do not mix. When you add essential oils to water, you can be sure they will separate. However, if you mix essential oils with a small amount of strong alcohol, they will dissolve more easily. I usually choose grain alcohol because I can buy it at my local liquor store. You can also choose isopropyl alcohol, but this is only 70% alcohol compared to 95% grain alcohol. It will work, but not as grain alcohol.

This recipe is for clothes only. Some of the essential oils in this blend may irritate the skin, but these shoes, pants, and shirts are perfect for hiking. Additionally, you may want to use this DIY tick repellant on adults and children over 2 years old.

Q: Yesterday I found a tick on the bathroom floor and last week I found a tick on my clothes. Is it possible to have ticks in my house? Or maybe in my yard? Ticks have very tough bodies and can resist trampling despite your best efforts. The best option is to pick up the bug with a piece of toilet paper and flush it down the toilet. This is a great way to get rid of acne that is creeping up on your body. However, if you see a bite, pick it out with tweezers, then wash it off.

Mites thrive in humid conditions with humidity of 90 percent or higher and cannot survive more than a few days in most climate-controlled poultry houses. Indoors they simply wither (dry) and die. Simply staying indoors can significantly shorten a tick’s lifespan. In fact, the Tick Resource Center (TERC) at the University of Rhode Island reported the results of a study in which 75 percent of immature deer ticks exposed to indoor humidity died within 8 hours. Although a tick can survive in a wet laundry basket for a few days, it won’t last long enough to reproduce.

How To Get Rid Of Ticks In Your House

There are several home remedies you can try for ticks. First, sprinkle plenty of salt or boric acid on the area where you see the ticks to kill the tick larvae and eggs. Next, use bleach, rubbing alcohol, or dish soap to kill the adult mites. Place the ticks you find in any of these products to send those pesky bugs to bug heaven. For another home remedy for ticks, mix 20 drops of eucalyptus oil with 4 ounces of distilled water and spray the solution wherever ticks appear in the house.

If DIY methods don’t work, consider calling one of the best pest control companies like Orkin or Terminix to rid your home of pests.

Keep diatomaceous earth (DE) on hand to treat mite problems in high-risk environments like a rustic cabin, storage shed, or dog kennel.

Air conditioners remove moisture from the air. Barns, cabins, and other buildings that are not air-conditioned can provide perfect breeding grounds for ticks. The good news is that ticks are very easy to kill. To treat a tick infestation, try an insecticide that is not safe for internal use, such as Wonderside Flea and Tick Spray. Spray this mite killer on baseboards and moldings, under cabinets, corners and window sills to kill mites in minutes.

An all-natural alternative treatment is to spray DE on these areas as well as carpets and pet bedding. Diatomaceous earth is not earth at all but the finely ground exoskeletons of fossilized marine organisms. When particles come into contact with powdered DE, it acts as a desiccant, causing the particles to dehydrate. Be sure to buy food grade DE like Harris Diatomaceous Earth. Once DE dust settles, it is harmless to animals and people. However, it is recommended to wear a mask, goggles and gloves when applying the powder: with prolonged use, the powder can damage the lungs and cause skin and eye irritation.

For ease of use, fill an empty DE talcum powder container and sprinkle.
