1. Start saying “I can’t afford it”. That may be true, at least for now. Just watch how you work when you can afford it but just don’t “want” to pay. πŸ™‚

2. As a general rule, always look for bargains/options that are priced lower than what you can afford.

3. Tell your friends and family that you are saving money and getting out of debt. They will be more likely to try to find ways to support your efforts (hopefully). If not, stay the course and stick to your plan.

4. Stop all Autopay billing for 6 months. You want to start paying your bills proactively, even online through your calendar, and be more aware of what you need and when you need it.

5. If you plan to use online bill pay, do it manually for at least six months so you have more control over your money.

6. Cut the cord. Have fun with Youtube, Vimeo, Bitchute and other free online content delivery platforms. There is a ton of amazing free content out there.

8. Start weekly meal planning (there’s a planner in our library of freebies and printables).

9. Stop buying books, CDs, DVDs and magazines. Go to the library, exchange books with friends and church.

16. Use a dollar store (Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Big Lot, etc.). Try to replace it with as many products as you would normally buy from Target, Walmart, etc.

17. If you have a regular prescription, contact your insurance company and ask about mail-in pricing.

18. Don’t pay for lawn care. Buy a used lawnmower and start cutting the grass yourself, or let those teenagers do the work. πŸ™‚

25. Smartphone applications. This can quickly lead to budget “leakage”. There are plenty of free apps to replace them.

30. Avoid membership clubs like Costco, Sam’s and BJ’s. I have run the numbers and they do nothing for us. Caveat emptor (buyer beware).

31. If you want to buy or rent a house, always try to keep your rent/mortgage to less than 25% of your monthly take-home pay. Always choose the most expensive option, unless it involves living in a war zone.

32. Shop Discounts Dollar Tree has 2 $1 greeting cards and some of the funniest cards I’ve ever seen.

33. Christmas presents. Talk to your family about setting spending limits, especially when it comes to eliminating debt. As minimalists, we also do a lot of “renovating”.

34. This season, instead of spending more than $10 per person to go ice skating or skating, take a family outing to a state park.

35. Stop paying retail price for jeans. This is a great opportunity to try your hand at thrift shopping. Jeans are very strong and thrift stores usually have a lot of them.

37. Consider refinancing your home mortgage to lower the interest rate and change the fixed term from 30 to 15 years. Yes, the monthly payments will be higher, but it could save you tens to hundreds of thousands in interest costs over the life of the loan.
